Acton, Massachusetts: A 17-year-old Indian-origin student has been arrested in Massachusetts after his mother and younger brother were found dead inside their family home, with investigators alleging that the teenager had previously made disturbing online searches about killing his family.
Arjun Aravind, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, is facing murder and other charges following the deaths of his mother, 45-year-old Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddarth Aravind.
The teenager was taken into custody early Wednesday in neighbouring Wayland after an overnight search that began when police discovered the bodies at the family’s home on Martha Lane in Acton, roughly 48 kilometres from Boston.
Tutor’s visit led to discovery
According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo, authorities were alerted Tuesday evening when a tutor arrived at the residence shortly after 6.30 pm for a scheduled appointment.
Unable to enter the house, the tutor contacted Aravind’s father. After failing to get in touch with his family, he requested a police welfare check.
Officers who reached the property found Venkatesan in the basement and Siddarth on the first floor. Both had suffered what authorities described as obvious trauma.
The medical examiner has yet to determine the precise cause and manner of death. Investigators are also examining what weapon, if any, was used.
Teen disappeared after alleged killings
Police said Aravind could not initially be found at the residence. His mother’s Honda Accord was also missing, prompting authorities to issue an alert and begin searching for the teenager.
The vehicle was eventually located in a parking area in Wayland early Wednesday after local officers responded to an unrelated alarm. Aravind was inside the car and was arrested without incident, according to investigators.
He has been charged with two counts of murder, along with allegations including assault and battery involving household or family members, assault and battery, unauthorised use of a vehicle and motor vehicle theft.
Investigators cite disturbing online activity
A particularly troubling aspect of the investigation emerged as detectives examined Aravind’s online activity.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said the investigation indicated that the teenager had recently displayed concerning behaviour and had used the internet, including ChatGPT, to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies involving the killing of his family.
Authorities said some of the activity involved requests related to creating fictional, Gothic-style stories, including developing characters and scenarios.
The investigation into the teenager’s online activity remains part of the broader case. Authorities have not suggested that the use of an AI chatbot itself caused or directly led to the alleged killings.
Case moves towards court proceedings
Aravind was expected to appear in Juvenile Court in Lowell. However, because that court does not have jurisdiction over murder charges, proceedings involving the murder and related assault allegations are expected to take place in Concord District Court.
The investigation remains underway, while authorities continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Venkatesan and Siddarth.
The allegations against Aravind have not been proven in court, and the teenager remains entitled to due process as the case proceeds.
