Chandigarh: After a brief spell of intense heat, Haryana is likely to see a change in weather from tonight, with monsoon activity expected to increase across the state. The forecast points to light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several areas, with some places likely to receive heavy showers through August 15.
The Department of Agricultural Meteorology at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Hisar, said the change is linked to the strengthening of monsoon currents over the region.
Dr Madan Khichad, head of the department, said the monsoon trough is currently extending from Bikaner through Satna and Daltonganj towards the northeast Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and a northward movement of the trough are expected to support increased rainfall activity in Haryana.
Rain to bring relief from daytime heat
The weather system is likely to remain active over the next few days. Most parts of the state could witness showers along with thunderstorms and strong winds, while isolated areas may receive heavier rainfall.
The increased cloud cover is expected to bring down daytime temperatures. At the same time, minimum temperatures could rise slightly as clouds limit the extent of night-time cooling.
The shift comes after Haryana recorded a noticeable rise in daytime temperatures.
Gurugram records 37.1°C
The state’s average maximum temperature increased by 4.2°C over the past 24 hours. Gurugram recorded the highest reading, with the NorthCap University automatic weather station registering 37.1°C.
Among other major locations, Chandigarh recorded 36.4°C, while Ambala touched 36.2°C. Hisar and Rohtak both recorded 35.4°C, with Karnal registering 34.5°C.
Meteorologists attributed the rise largely to strong sunshine during the day. With rain and cloud cover expected from tonight, the mercury is likely to come down over the next few days.
Night temperatures largely stable
There was little change in overnight temperatures across Haryana. The state’s average minimum temperature fell by only 0.1°C during the past 24 hours.
Gurugram recorded the lowest minimum at 22°C, around 4.3°C below normal. Chandigarh recorded 24.4°C, followed by Panchkula at 24.8°C and Bhiwani at 25°C.
Karnal recorded a minimum of 25.3°C, while Narnaul and Hisar both recorded 27°C.
The meteorological department expects nighttime temperatures to edge upwards as cloud cover increases.

With the monsoon system becoming more active, residents across Haryana can expect a combination of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the coming days.
The spell could provide some relief from the recent rise in temperatures, although heavy showers in isolated areas may also affect normal activities. Residents are advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and follow local weather advisories, particularly in areas that receive intense rainfall.
