Amritsar: In a move to enforce strict administrative and religious discipline, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has penalized 20 employees for violating the organization’s mandatory dress code. The action was taken after several staff members, including managers and accountants, attended a recent meeting dressed in western attire such as suits, coats, pants, and jeans.

Under the authority of Section 85 of the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, President Dhami has ordered each of the 20 employees to deposit a fine of ₹2,100 into the Guru ki Golak (charity box). The SGPC had previously implemented a mandatory uniform policy requiring all employees to wear the traditional kurta-pyjama while on duty. This policy aims to ensure that staff members are easily identifiable among the large crowds of devotees and to maintain the spiritual and traditional decorum of the Gurdwara premises.

This enforcement comes at a time when the SGPC has been increasing its focus on internal discipline and transparency. By mandating traditional attire, the committee seeks to preserve the historical and religious identity of its workforce, distinguishing them from the general public while they perform their administrative and religious duties.
