California: A 57-year-old Sikh man who was abducted from a gurdwara complex in California has been found dead, prompting an intensive investigation by authorities in the United States. The deceased, identified as Avtar Singh, had been living in the state for several years after moving from Ludhiana, Punjab.
Singh worked as a cook at a gurdwara in Tracy and resided within the religious premises. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a missing person report on the night of February 17 after receiving information that Singh had been forcibly taken away.
Deputies reached the 16000 block of West Grant Line Road at around 8:52 p.m. that evening. Surveillance footage later reviewed by investigators reportedly shows three unidentified men dressed in dark clothing escorting Singh into a white SUV before driving off. Authorities circulated images of both Singh and the suspected vehicle on social media, appealing to the public for assistance in locating him.
In the days following the abduction, community members gathered in prayer and shared messages of concern online. The case drew further attention after Sikh religious leader Baba Harnam Singh Dhuma posted about the incident, confirming that Singh’s body had been discovered.
Police have not yet disclosed the exact circumstances surrounding his death and said the cause remains under examination. Investigators are working to identify the individuals seen in the CCTV footage and determine the motive behind the kidnapping.
The tragedy has deeply affected the local Sikh community, where Singh was known for his service at the gurdwara. Social media posts mourning his death highlighted his dedication and kindness. Some commenters also mentioned that his wife had recently given birth to triplets just three months ago.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to come forward as the investigation continues.
