New Delhi: In a firm step aimed at preserving cleanliness and maintaining decorum, the Supreme Court of India has prohibited the consumption of pan masala, gutka, tobacco and similar substances within its premises.

A circular issued on February 11, 2026, by the Administrative General Branch of the apex court directs all advocates, litigants, staff and visitors to strictly avoid chewing such products inside court buildings. The order also explicitly bars spitting of any residue within the court complex.

The move is intended to uphold hygiene standards and ensure a dignified environment in the country’s highest judicial institution. Court authorities emphasized that maintaining cleanliness within the premises is a shared responsibility of all building users.

Officials indicated that appropriate action may be taken in case of violations, reinforcing the court’s resolve to ensure that its premises remain orderly and free from littering caused by tobacco-related products.
