US trade framework graphic underscores Washington’s stance on Jammu and Kashmir

Washington: A graphic released by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) as part of the newly announced India–US interim trade framework has sent a clear diplomatic signal by depicting Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India, including areas under Pakistan’s occupation.

The map, shared to illustrate tariff adjustments and trade flows between the two countries, shows India’s internationally recognised boundaries without ambiguity. Jammu and Kashmir appears fully within Indian territory, aligning with New Delhi’s long-standing position and contradicting Pakistan’s claims over the region.

Observers say the depiction reflects Washington’s acceptance of India’s official political map and reinforces the US view that unsubstantiated territorial assertions have no standing. The move has been widely seen as an endorsement of ground realities rather than political posturing.

Diplomatic discomfort for Islamabad

The development is being viewed as a setback for Pakistan, which in recent months has intensified outreach to Washington. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief Asim Munir have both engaged US officials in a bid to reset ties and push Islamabad’s narrative on key regional issues, including Kashmir.

Despite these efforts, the USTR graphic suggests that such lobbying has not altered the US position. Analysts note that while Washington continues to maintain strategic and economic interests in Pakistan — including cooperation on minerals and defence sales — it has shown little inclination to accommodate claims that run counter to established facts.

The episode also highlights shifting dynamics within Pakistan’s own power structure, where the military leadership has taken a more assertive role in foreign engagement. However, that internal recalibration appears to have had limited impact on US policy.

India’s growing strategic weight

Diplomatic experts say the message from Washington is broader than just cartography. It underlines India’s central role in US foreign and economic strategy at a time when the two countries are deepening cooperation across trade, technology and security.

The map was part of an infographic detailing India’s commitments under the interim trade framework, including tariff reductions or eliminations on select US exports such as tree nuts, red sorghum, fresh and processed fruits, dried distillers’ grains, and American wines and spirits.

In return, the US has agreed to lower duties on Indian goods to 18 per cent from earlier higher rates and withdraw an additional 25 per cent levy, providing relief to Indian exporters.

Taken together, the trade announcements and the unambiguous territorial depiction are being read as a strong indication of Washington’s priorities — reaffirming India’s importance as a global partner while delivering a pointed diplomatic message that is likely to resonate in Islamabad’s power corridors.
