Georgia: A routine police inquiry turned deadly on Sunday when a man opened fire on two officers at a hotel in suburban Atlanta, killing one and leaving another critically injured, officials confirmed.

The incident unfolded at a hotel near Stone Mountain, roughly 40 kilometres northeast of Atlanta, after officers responded to a complaint alleging fraudulent activity connected to a room booking. Gwinnett County Police Chief JD McClure said the officers were speaking with the suspect inside his room when the situation escalated without warning.

According to police, the man welcomed the officers into the room and began discussing the matter. During the interaction, he suddenly pulled out a handgun and fired at both officers. One of the officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, later died from his injuries at a hospital. Tamang, originally from Nepal, had joined the Gwinnett County Police Department only last year. His colleague, Officer David Reed, was rushed to hospital and remains in serious but stable condition.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, was also wounded in the exchange and is receiving medical treatment. Authorities said he is expected to survive. It remains unclear whether he has legal representation.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed condolences and paid tribute to law enforcement personnel, calling the incident a stark reminder of the risks officers face in the line of duty.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe, as is standard practice in officer-involved shootings. Officials said further charges against the suspect will be determined following the investigation in coordination with local prosecutors.
