Chandigarh: The Punjab government has completed a comprehensive assessment of the extensive damage caused by recent floods across the state, estimating total losses at Rs 11,855 crore. The findings have been compiled in a final report prepared with technical support from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

Officials said the report will soon be forwarded to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as the state seeks financial assistance to address the widespread destruction and support recovery efforts.

According to the assessment, agricultural losses account for a major share of the damage. The floods severely affected paddy cultivation across nearly five lakh acres, particularly in six districts that bore the brunt of overflowing rivers and prolonged waterlogging. Large stretches of standing crops were destroyed, raising concerns about farmers’ livelihoods and the upcoming procurement season.

In addition to agriculture, the report outlines losses incurred by multiple government departments, including damage to infrastructure, irrigation systems, roads, and public utilities. Officials involved in preparing the document said the damage estimates were calculated after detailed field surveys and technical analysis.

The state government is expected to use the report as the basis for seeking central assistance and planning long-term measures to strengthen flood management and mitigation. Authorities have indicated that relief and rehabilitation efforts will be prioritised in the worst-hit districts once funding support is approved.

The floods, triggered by intense rainfall and swollen rivers, had submerged vast areas of Punjab, displacing residents and disrupting normal life for weeks. The final damage assessment marks a key step toward recovery and rebuilding across the affected regions.
