Mau: A 32-year-old snack trader was left critically injured after being stabbed during a dispute over money in Dariyabad village under the Ghosi police station area, police said on Wednesday. The knife used in the attack remained embedded in his abdomen for nearly three hours, highlighting the severity of the assault.

The incident took place around 9 pm on Tuesday when an argument broke out between the trader, identified as Udaybhan, and a customer over the repayment of borrowed money. According to police, the verbal altercation quickly turned violent, with the accused allegedly attacking Udaybhan with a knife. He sustained injuries to his shoulder and abdomen, and the attacker also reportedly attempted to set him on fire before fleeing the scene.

During the attack, the knife became lodged in the victim’s abdomen. Alerted by villagers, police rushed to the spot and arranged for the injured man to be taken first to a community health centre and later shifted to the district hospital. Doctors there carried out a complex procedure to remove the knife, which had remained inside his body for approximately three hours.

Given his critical condition, Udaybhan was referred around midnight to the BHU Trauma Centre in Varanasi for specialised treatment. Ghosi Station House Officer Pramendra Kumar Singh said a case has been registered and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused, who escaped after the attack.

Local residents said disputes over outstanding dues between the trader and creditors had occurred in the past, though police are continuing their investigation to establish the full sequence of events.
