New Delhi: Delhi Police have launched a detailed investigation into the violence that broke out during an anti-encroachment operation near the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque in the Ramlila Maidan area, registering an FIR and detaining five individuals for questioning, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when teams from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were executing a demolition exercise ordered by the Delhi High Court on land adjacent to the mosque and a nearby burial ground. According to police, sections of the crowd reacted aggressively as the operation progressed, allegedly hurling stones and glass bottles at security personnel.

At least five police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation. To regain control of the situation, law enforcement resorted to firing tear gas shells, after which the area was brought under control.

Police officials said the detained individuals are being questioned to determine their role in the disturbance. Investigators are also examining whether the unrest was an impulsive reaction or the result of prior planning aimed at obstructing the civic exercise.

Senior officers confirmed that CCTV recordings from the locality, along with videos shared on social media platforms, are being scrutinised to identify others involved. Statements from witnesses and those in custody are being collected as part of the ongoing probe.

The FIR has been lodged under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to rioting, disobedience of lawful orders, obstructing and assaulting public servants, and causing damage to public property. Sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984, have also been invoked.

Meanwhile, civic authorities clarified that the structure of the mosque was not affected during the demolition. The MCD reiterated that the drive was conducted strictly in accordance with the High Court’s directions.

Officials said the operation involved significant resources, with approximately 30 bulldozers and 50 dump trucks deployed to remove illegal constructions and debris. More than 300 MCD personnel were engaged in the exercise, which continued through the night.

The drive resulted in the removal of extensive encroachments, including several structures that had been declared unlawful by the court. Police said security arrangements remain in place in the area as a preventive measure.

“The situation is peaceful and normal conditions have been restored,” a senior police officer said, adding that those found responsible for the violence would face strict legal action.
