Chamoli: A rescue operation is underway at an under-construction tunnel of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC) in Pipalkoti, Chamoli, after a sudden influx of water and debris trapped workers inside the structure. Seven people have been declared dead, while several others have been rescued and taken to hospital, officials said.
The incident has triggered a large-scale response involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), with efforts continuing to locate and evacuate those still inside the tunnel.
19 workers brought to hospital
According to officials at the District Hospital in Gopeshwar, 19 people were brought to the facility following the incident. Seven were declared dead after being taken to the hospital.
Of the remaining workers, several were reported to be in stable condition, while others required medical attention. Ten were admitted for treatment, and one worker whose condition was described as unstable was referred to the Base Hospital in Srinagar.
The number of workers initially reported to be inside the tunnel was around 20 to 22, according to THDC Executive Director (Projects) Kumar Sharad.
Water surged inside tunnel during rescue
The rescue operation has been complicated by the amount of water inside the tunnel.
NDRF team commander Amrit Lal Meena said rescuers encountered a substantial volume of water after reaching the site. Water was also reportedly entering the tunnel from the sides, making access to the affected section difficult.
Rescue personnel have been using specialised equipment to search through the flooded portion and reach those who may still be trapped.
NDRF, SDRF teams deployed
Both NDRF and SDRF personnel have been deployed at the site and are continuing the operation.
Officials said the rescue effort will continue until all workers are accounted for. Four bodies had been recovered from the water during the initial stages of the operation, while the hospital later confirmed seven deaths among those brought in.
The condition of the injured workers is being monitored by medical teams at Gopeshwar, with those requiring advanced treatment being shifted to higher medical centres.
