New Delhi: The Delhi Police carried out a major crackdown in the national capital’s South-East district on Saturday under ‘Operation Aaghat 3.0’, apprehending hundreds of people and seizing a large cache of arms, drugs, illegal liquor, vehicles and cash.
The operation was launched as Delhi prepares for New Year celebrations, a period that typically witnesses heavy public movement across the city. According to officials quoted by news agency PTI, the objective of the drive was to curb organised crime, street offences and the activities of habitual offenders to ensure public safety during the festive period. More than 600 police personnel were deployed across the district to carry out the operation.
During the crackdown, police arrested 331 people under provisions of the Delhi Excise Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Public Gambling Act. In addition, 504 individuals were apprehended under various preventive sections of the law. Officials also detained 116 individuals listed as ‘bad characters’, arrested five auto-lifters and four proclaimed offenders, and took action against 1,306 people under the Delhi Police Act.
The operation led to the seizure of 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges and 27 knives under the Arms Act. Police also recovered 6.01 kilograms of ganja and seized ₹2.36 lakh from gambling-related activities. A total of 12,258 quarters of illegal liquor were also confiscated during the drive.
Several vehicles and electronic items were recovered, including six two-wheelers, one four-wheeler and 310 mobile phones. Additionally, 231 two-wheelers were seized for traffic and other violations, officials said.
Police officials noted that intensified patrolling, vehicle checks and night surveillance in the South-East district have led to a reduction in PCR calls related to street crime over the past month. They said such operations would continue in the run-up to the New Year to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
