Mohali, Punjab: Punjab Police have gunned down one of the shooters involved in the killing of kabaddi player and promoter Digvijay Singh alias Rana Balachauria in an encounter in Mohali, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the encounter took place in the Laldu area of Mohali, where a police team laid a trap and neutralised the accused. The shooter who was killed is believed to be the same person who had allegedly shot Rana Balachauria on the pretext of taking a selfie during a kabaddi tournament.
Police officials said the accused had approached Rana Balachauria posing as an admirer and opened fire at close range, leading to his death. The encounter is part of the ongoing investigation into the high-profile murder that sent shockwaves across the kabaddi community in Punjab.
Earlier in the day, photographs of two alleged shooters, identified as Aditya Kapoor and Karan Pathak, surfaced in connection with the case. Police stated that the murder was carried out after detailed planning, though it has not yet been officially confirmed which of the accused was killed in the encounter.
Investigators have also revealed that the conspiracy involved more than just the shooters. Individuals who were allegedly keeping track of Rana Balachauria’s movements during the tournament and passing on information to the attackers are also under the scanner. Police teams are working to identify and arrest all those involved in reconnaissance and logistical support for the crime.
Further investigation is underway, and officials said more arrests are likely as the probe progresses.
