Hyderabad: A 38-year-old doctor from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh allegedly ended her life at her flat in Hyderabad, police said on Sunday, citing depression over a denied US visa. The incident was discovered on Saturday after her family, who live in another part of the city, broke open the door when there was no response.
The domestic help had alerted the family after Rohini did not answer the door, according to authorities. The body was handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination. Preliminary reports suggest that she may have overdosed on sleeping pills or administered a fatal injection on Friday night. The exact cause of death is still under investigation pending detailed post-mortem results.
A suicide note recovered from her residence reportedly mentioned her depression and frustration over the visa rejection. Lakshmi, Rohini’s mother, said her daughter had been eagerly preparing to move to the US for work but became increasingly depressed after the application was denied.
Rohini, who resided in Padma Rao Nagar for proximity to libraries, aspired to specialise in internal medicine. “She was a brilliant student, completing her MBBS in Kyrgyzstan from 2005 to 2010 with excellent academic records and big dreams,” Lakshmi said. She added that Rohini had fully dedicated herself to her medical career and had remained unmarried.
Lakshmi noted that she had advised her daughter to continue practicing in India, but Rohini believed that the US offered better opportunities and higher patient volumes. The mother added that the weeks of waiting for visa approval had left Rohini mentally exhausted and isolated.
Chilkalguda Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter further.
