Washington/Tehran: Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated over the weekend after American forces carried out airstrikes on military sites in southern Iran, following the reported downing of a US surveillance drone near the region.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the operation targeted radar installations and drone command facilities located in the Goruk area and on Qeshm Island. According to US military officials, the strikes were conducted in response to what they described as hostile actions by Iranian forces against an American MQ-1 drone flying over international waters.
US officials stated that fighter aircraft were deployed shortly after the incident and struck multiple military assets believed to pose a threat to maritime security in the region. Among the targets reportedly destroyed were air defence systems, a drone control station and two attack drones.
CENTCOM characterised the military action as a defensive measure aimed at protecting American personnel and interests. The command said the operation was carefully calibrated and carried out without any casualties among US troops.
The latest confrontation comes as both countries remain engaged in delicate diplomatic efforts to preserve a ceasefire and reduce tensions across the region.
Iran, however, offered a sharply different account of the incident. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that its air defence units intercepted and shot down an American MQ-1 drone after it allegedly entered Iranian airspace. Iranian authorities maintained that the aircraft was detected by surveillance systems before being targeted by missile batteries.
Iranian officials argued that the drone had crossed into restricted territory and accused it of conducting activities that threatened national security. State-linked media reported that the aircraft was destroyed after being identified as a potential hostile asset.
The military exchange unfolded against the backdrop of ongoing discussions over a possible understanding between Washington and Tehran aimed at extending the current ceasefire arrangement.
According to reports from US media outlets, President Donald Trump has sought further revisions to a proposed framework that would include a temporary halt in hostilities, measures to ease navigation concerns in the Strait of Hormuz and a roadmap for renewed negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.
While discussions have continued behind closed doors, no formal agreement has been announced. A recent high-level meeting at the White House reportedly ended without a final decision, highlighting the challenges facing both sides.
Trump has repeatedly stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a central objective of any future deal. Speaking in a television interview, he reiterated that a guarantee against nuclear weapon development would be essential before any agreement could move forward.
Iranian leaders have also adopted a cautious stance. Senior officials in Tehran have indicated that any proposal must safeguard the country’s interests and sovereign rights. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Iran would reject terms it considers unfair, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged caution against speculation until negotiations reach a definitive conclusion.
Despite the military flare-up, diplomatic contacts are understood to be continuing, with both sides reportedly exchanging proposals and revisions in an effort to bridge remaining differences.
The latest developments underscore the fragile nature of relations between Washington and Tehran, where military incidents and diplomatic negotiations continue to unfold simultaneously, leaving uncertainty over whether a broader agreement can ultimately be achieved.
