Ukraine’s Cabinet Building Hit by Russian Strikes; Kyiv Retaliates on Russian Oil Pipeline

Kyiv: In a sharp escalation of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Russian forces targeted a government building in central Kyiv early Sunday, causing fires, structural damage, and claiming at least three lives—including a one-year-old child. In response, Ukrainian forces launched a counterattack on Russia’s Druzhba oil pipeline in the Bryansk region, signaling a new phase of hostilities impacting both administrative and energy infrastructure.

Thick smoke poured from the upper floors and roof of the cabinet building in Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district following the overnight attack, which officials described as the most severe in recent months.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressed deep sorrow over the losses, saying, “This is the first time a government office has been directly hit. We will rebuild the buildings, but lives lost cannot be replaced.” She urged Western allies to impose stricter sanctions on Russian oil and gas, stressing that words alone are insufficient.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported that the assault began with a drone wave and was followed by missile strikes. Among the dead were a one-year-old child, a young woman, and an elderly woman sheltering in a basement. A pregnant woman was also wounded. Residential neighborhoods in Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts were struck, with falling debris igniting fires and partially collapsing high-rise structures. Emergency crews worked through the night to contain the blazes.

Ukraine’s air force stated that the Russian offensive involved 805 drones and 13 missiles. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and urged citizens to stay in shelters. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the attack as “a serious escalation” due to the direct strike on government offices and called for enhanced air defense support from international allies.

In a swift retaliation, Ukrainian forces targeted the Druzhba oil pipeline in Bryansk, dealing significant fire damage to a key route supplying oil to Hungary and Slovakia, according to drone commander Robert Brovdi. The counterstrike is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy of targeting Russian energy facilities amid ongoing European sanctions.

Other cities faced attacks as well. In Kremenchuk, multiple explosions damaged power infrastructure, cutting electricity to parts of the city, according to Mayor Vitalii Maletskyi.

The events mark a rapid intensification of the conflict, highlighting the growing risks to both civilians and critical infrastructure as tensions escalate across the region.
