Florida – U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is “closer than ever before,” following a significant meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Florida estate. While projecting confidence, the President tempered expectations by admitting that the negotiations remain fragile and complex, warning that a failure to reach an accord now could result in the war dragging on for years.
The summit took place shortly after President Trump conducted a two-and-a-half-hour telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he described as “excellent.” Despite Trump’s assertion that Putin desires peace, the conflict’s volatility was underscored by a fresh wave of Russian attacks launched against Ukraine while Zelensky was en route to the United States. During a joint press appearance, Trump praised Zelensky as “brave” and stated his belief that “Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed,” suggesting a potential shift in the diplomatic landscape nearly four years into the invasion.
However, both leaders acknowledged that major obstacles stand in the way of a final deal, particularly concerning the status of territories currently held by Russian forces and the provision of security guarantees to prevent future aggression against Ukraine. In an effort to coordinate a unified Western response, Trump and Zelensky held a joint call with several European heads of state, including leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland. Zelensky indicated that a follow-up summit involving these European allies is being planned for January, potentially in Washington, reaffirming that “Ukraine is ready for peace.”
