Tensions Escalate Near Hormuz as Iran Warns of Retaliation Over US Seizure of Vessel

Tehran: Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified after Tehran condemned the seizure of one of its vessels near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, vowing a prompt response to what it described as an act of aggression.

According to Iranian state media, the country’s military leadership criticised the US operation, calling it a violation of an existing ceasefire arrangement. Officials alleged that American forces boarded and took control of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, labelling the move as unlawful and provocative.

The United States, however, maintained that the vessel had breached a naval blockade and failed to comply with repeated warnings. US authorities stated that action was taken after the ship attempted to cross a restricted zone, prompting intervention by naval forces.

Amid the rising tensions, Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref issued a strong warning regarding the implications of continued pressure on Tehran. He emphasised that ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz cannot be taken for granted while Iran faces curbs on its oil exports.

Aref cautioned that any disruption in the region could have far-reaching consequences, particularly for global energy markets that rely heavily on the waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes, making it a focal point of geopolitical tensions.

The latest development comes at a time of heightened friction in West Asia, with both sides adopting firm positions. Observers warn that any further escalation in the region could impact maritime security and global trade flows, especially in the energy sector.
