Ottawa: A 29-year-old police officer of Punjabi origin lost his life after being struck and dragged by a vehicle allegedly driven by a suspect attempting to escape custody in Canada, in an incident that has shocked the local community and law enforcement agencies.
The deceased officer has been identified as Tarun Bali, who was responding to an attempted escape by 18-year-old suspect Zonathan Mignalt from a hospital where he was under police supervision. According to preliminary reports, the accused managed to flee custody and attempted to escape in a vehicle.
Police personnel reportedly deployed spike strips in an effort to stop the fleeing vehicle. However, the suspect allegedly drove through the barricade and struck Officer Bali, trapping him beneath the vehicle before speeding away.
Emergency responders rushed the injured officer to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for critical injuries. Despite intensive medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, while the accused has been taken into custody and is expected to face multiple serious charges in connection with the officer’s death and escape attempt.
The tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues, community leaders and members of the Punjabi diaspora, who have paid tribute to Officer Bali’s dedication and service. Many described him as a committed officer who made the ultimate sacrifice while carrying out his duty to protect the public.
