Mumbai: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney landed in Mumbai, beginning a four-day trip to India focused on boosting trade and expanding bilateral cooperation. He is accompanied by his wife, Daina Fix Carney.
Soon after his arrival, Carney shared a message on social media highlighting India’s rapid economic growth and outlining his objective to engage with business leaders to create fresh prospects for Canadian enterprises and workers.
During his stay in Mumbai, the prime minister is expected to interact with industry representatives before travelling to New Delhi on March 1. On March 2, he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His schedule in the national capital also includes meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and participation in the India-Canada CEO Forum, where he will address top executives from both nations. Carney is slated to return to Canada at the end of the visit.
The trip carries diplomatic weight as New Delhi and Ottawa seek to stabilise and rebuild relations after a period of strain. Bilateral ties had deteriorated under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following allegations concerning the killing of Sikh separatist figures in Canada — claims India strongly rejected.
Officials said the upcoming discussions between Modi and Carney will assess progress across multiple sectors within the strategic partnership. The two leaders previously met in Kananaskis in June 2025 and in Johannesburg in November 2025, where they explored ways to deepen engagement.
Key areas on the agenda include trade and investment, energy collaboration, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides are also expected to deliberate on regional and global developments.
The visit comes at a time when Canada is seeking to broaden its international partnerships amid shifting geopolitical and economic pressures. India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, is seen as a pivotal partner in that effort.
