Donald Trump’s China Visit Set for Key Talks on Trade, Global Security and Iran Crisis

Washington: US President Donald Trump will travel to China this week for a three-day state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, with major discussions expected to focus on rising tensions in West Asia, economic cooperation and strategic global concerns.

Beijing officially confirmed that Trump will be in China from May 13 to 15, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the world’s two largest economies at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty.

The meeting is expected to feature extensive talks on the escalating crisis in West Asia, particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Senior US officials have indicated that Trump and Xi have already held multiple conversations on Tehran and Russia in recent weeks, with Washington closely watching Beijing’s economic ties with both nations.

According to officials, the United States has raised concerns over financial flows, industrial support and possible strategic assistance that could indirectly strengthen countries facing American pressure.

Trade and investment will also dominate the agenda as both sides attempt to ease tensions and explore fresh areas of cooperation. Negotiations are likely to cover proposals linked to bilateral trade frameworks as well as partnerships in sectors such as agriculture, aerospace and energy.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the visit could lay the groundwork for future economic agreements aimed at stabilising relations between the two powers after years of trade disputes and tariff confrontations.

The Taiwan issue is also expected to be discussed, although US officials have stressed there is no shift in Washington’s long-standing policy position. They described Taiwan as a regular topic in leader-level talks but said no major announcements are anticipated.

Trump’s visit comes shortly after the US imposed new sanctions targeting Iran’s energy and banking sectors, a move that has increased friction involving countries maintaining trade links with Tehran, including China.

Officials have also hinted at plans for Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan to make a return visit to Washington later this year, signaling efforts by both governments to maintain high-level diplomatic engagement despite strategic rivalry.

The summit is being closely watched by global markets and international observers, who see it as a critical moment for shaping future US-China relations and broader geopolitical stability.
