Sharifpur, Bangladesh: A shocking incident of violence has once again rocked Bangladesh, with a Hindu businessman in Sharifpur district left critically injured after a brutal attack allegedly driven by communal hatred.
The incident occurred in the Kadamdha area under Damudya police station, where a 50-year-old Hindu trader, identified as Khokan Chandra Das, was assaulted by a mob on Wednesday night. According to local accounts, the attackers first beat him with sticks before stabbing him with a sharp weapon. They then allegedly poured petrol on him and attempted to set him on fire.
Khokan Chandra Das runs a grocery and mobile banking business at the Kacherganj market. Police said the attack took place around 9:30 pm when he was returning home after closing his shop and counting the day’s earnings. The assailants reportedly intercepted him near the Damudya–Sharifpur road close to the market and launched the attack.
Panic gripped the area following the assault, prompting nearby residents to rush to the spot. To save himself, the injured trader jumped into a pond beside the road. The attackers fled after locals raised an alarm.
The victim was rescued and taken to Sharifpur Sadar Hospital around 10 pm. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Medical officials said he suffered serious injuries to multiple parts of his body, including deep wounds to his legs, burns on his face, the back of his head, and his hands.
The trader’s wife, Seema Das, alleged that her husband had recognised two of the attackers, which she believes led them to attempt to kill him. She stated that the family has no known disputes or enmity with anyone and described the attack as unprovoked and deeply disturbing.
Sharifpur Sadar Hospital doctor Nazrul Islam confirmed that the victim sustained severe injuries and required urgent referral due to his critical condition. Damudya police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khizir Haque said police reached the spot soon after receiving information and have identified two suspects, both local residents. Efforts are underway to arrest them, and investigators are also probing whether others were involved in the attack.
The incident has sparked concern among minority communities in the region, with locals demanding swift arrests and strict action against those responsible.
