New Delhi: Pakistan has officially confirmed that it will participate in the FIH Junior World Cup, set to be held in India later this year, Hockey India Secretary General Bholanath Singh announced.
This confirmation comes after an earlier reluctance, when Pakistan had declined to send its teams to India for the ongoing Hockey Asia Cup. At the time, political tensions and logistical concerns were cited as reasons for their absence. However, with the Junior World Cup approaching, Pakistan has agreed to field its teams, signaling a thaw in their sports participation stance.
The announcement also raises questions regarding recent directives from India’s Sports Ministry. Officials had earlier stated that Pakistani athletes would not be allowed to participate in sporting events in India, a statement widely interpreted as primarily concerning cricket. Whether this restriction extends to hockey or other sports remains a matter of clarification.
Hockey India officials are currently coordinating with the Sports Ministry and other relevant authorities to ensure that all arrangements, including visas and security protocols, are in place to facilitate Pakistan’s smooth participation. This move is seen as a positive step for promoting sports diplomacy and maintaining continuity in international hockey tournaments between the two neighboring nations.
The FIH Junior World Cup will provide a platform for young talent from both countries to compete, fostering competitive spirit and sporting camaraderie despite wider political tensions.
