Kuldeep Yadav Shines with Five-Wicket Haul as India Enforces Follow-On Against West Indies

New Delhi: Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav delivered yet another masterclass with the ball, claiming his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket, as India dominated the third day of the ongoing Test match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

After posting a commanding 518-run total in the first innings, India bundled out the visitors for 248 in the opening session of Day 3. Though many expected the innings to be wrapped up earlier, the West Indies lower-order trio — Khary Pierre, Anderson Phillip, and Jayden Seales — showed surprising resilience, frustrating the Indian bowlers with a determined effort.

Despite the resistance, Kuldeep’s spin wizardry, supported by the pace and precision of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and spin partners Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, eventually wore down the tailenders. With a lead of 270 runs, India chose to enforce the follow-on, a decision made jointly by stand-in skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Tactical Follow-On Sparks Interest

Rather than opting to bat again and allow their bowlers a breather, the Indian team opted for an aggressive strategy. The move was aimed at finishing the match within four days, giving the squad additional recovery time ahead of their upcoming white-ball tour of Australia.

This decision is also seen as a calculated effort to maximize points in the World Test Championship (WTC), where every win is crucial. Having dismissed the West Indies in just 84 overs, Indian bowlers are now eyeing an outright innings victory, with 45 overs still left in the day.

Kuldeep’s Golden Run Continues

Kuldeep’s latest five-for adds to his growing stature as a match-winner in red-ball cricket. His variation and control left the West Indian batters struggling for answers on a pitch that offered some turn but demanded skill to exploit.

“Kuldeep has become a lethal weapon in home conditions. He understands the pace and angles needed on these surfaces. His ability to break partnerships and attack the stumps is priceless,” said former cricketer and commentator VVS Laxman.

What’s Ahead?

With a comfortable lead and momentum firmly in their corner, India now looks to finish the job quickly. If the bowlers can replicate their first-innings intensity, there’s a real chance that India could wrap up the Test match by the end of Day 4, or possibly even before stumps today, depending on how the West Indies bat in their second innings.

Regardless of the final outcome, Day 3 has once again underlined India’s bowling depth — and Kuldeep Yadav’s rising stature as one of the team’s most reliable match-winners in Test cricket.
