AHMEDABAD — In a historic night at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Indian cricket team asserted its global dominance by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs to clinch the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Playing in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 100,000 spectators on Sunday, March 8, India became the first nation to successfully defend the title and the first host country to lift the trophy on home soil. This victory marks India’s third T20 World Cup crown, adding to their previous triumphs in 2007 and 2024.

The foundation of the victory was laid by a sensational batting display as India posted a mammoth 255 for five in their 20 overs, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson was the star of the show, smashing a breathtaking 89 off just 46 balls, which included eight sixes and five boundaries. His performance set a new record for the highest individual score in a tournament final. He was ably supported by explosive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, who hit 52 off 21 balls, and Ishan Kishan, who contributed 54 off 25 deliveries. A late cameo from Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 26 from only eight balls, ensured India finished with a target that proved insurmountable for the Black Caps.

New Zealand’s chase began under immense pressure and never truly gained momentum against a disciplined Indian bowling attack. Despite a spirited 52 from Tim Seifert, the Kiwi top order collapsed early as Axar Patel removed dangerous openers Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips. Jasprit Bumrah then delivered a masterclass in death bowling, finishing with remarkable figures of four wickets for 15 runs. New Zealand was eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. The clinical performance sparked nationwide celebrations, with fans across the country taking to the streets to hail the “Men in Blue” for their unprecedented achievement in world cricket.
