New Delhi: Indian para-athletics has been left mourning the death of Asian Para Games gold medallist Neeraj Yadav, who reportedly died after consuming poison at his residence. A post-mortem examination was under way at a Delhi hospital on Wednesday, while the circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear.

S Satyanarayana, head coach of the Indian para-athletics team, confirmed the news, expressing sadness over the loss of the accomplished athlete. He said he had received information about the incident, but Yadav’s body was still at the hospital.

The 42-year-old competed in the F55 category of para-athletics and was among India’s successful performers in international field events. His death comes after he missed the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya earlier this month because of a doping suspension.

Doping Suspension Before Major Competition

Yadav was reportedly under emotional stress following his exclusion from the Asian Para Games. However, the precise circumstances leading to his death have not been established, and no definitive conclusion has been reached about the factors involved.

Satyanarayana said he could not identify a specific reason behind the tragedy. He also reflected on the pressures faced by athletes as they navigate the highs and lows of competitive sport.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the emotional challenges that sportspeople may encounter while dealing with setbacks, although the reasons for Yadav’s death remain unconfirmed.

Three Asian Para Games Gold Medals

Yadav built an impressive record at the Asian Para Games, winning three gold medals across two editions.

His first gold came in the javelin event at the 2018 Games in Jakarta. He added two more titles at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, winning gold in both the javelin and discus events.

His achievements established him as a prominent Indian competitor in para-athletics, particularly in seated throwing disciplines.

From Wheelchair Tennis to International Athletics

Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven, Yadav initially pursued wheelchair tennis before moving into para-athletics.

The transition proved successful, as he went on to compete internationally and secure major honours for India.

The F55 classification includes seated field events such as the shot put, discus and javelin, with athletes competing according to classification rules designed for their functional abilities.

Yadav’s achievements on the international stage marked a significant chapter in his sporting career. Further details surrounding his death were awaited as the post-mortem process continued in Delhi.
