Gautam Gambhir Defends Harshit Rana, Slams Online Criticism Over His Selection for Australia Tour

New Delhi: India’s Head coach Gautam Gambhir has come out strongly in defense of young pacer Harshit Rana, hitting back at critics questioning the 23-year-old’s inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Without naming anyone directly, Gambhir appeared to respond to remarks made by former cricketer Kris Srikkanth, who had questioned Rana’s selection. Speaking to reporters, Gambhir condemned what he described as “cheap publicity tactics” and “unfair targeting” of a young player for social media traction.

“It’s absolutely shameful that someone, just to boost views on their YouTube channel, is targeting a 23-year-old,” Gambhir said. “If you want to criticise me, do it — I can take it. But trolling a young kid who’s just starting his international career is disgraceful.”

The former India opener emphasised that Harshit Rana’s place in the squad was earned through consistent performances and not due to any influence. “His father is not a selector. Harshit has worked hard and earned this opportunity purely on merit. He deserves support, not unnecessary trolling,” he asserted.

Rana, who impressed with his pace and aggression during the IPL 2025 season for KKR, was named in the Indian team for the three-match ODI series in Australia. His selection has drawn mixed reactions, with some praising the move to give young fast bowlers exposure abroad, while others have questioned his readiness for the international stage.

Gambhir, known for his forthright views, said that constant online criticism of young players could damage their confidence. “People sitting behind microphones or in studios must understand that these players are still learning. Publicly ridiculing them for views or engagement can destroy morale. Constructive criticism is fine — but personal attacks are not,” he added.

Harshit Rana is one of several young cricketers included in India’s transitional ODI squad as selectors look to build a pool of fast bowlers for future overseas assignments. The right-arm pacer has taken 16 wickets in his last IPL season and has been praised for his aggressive intent and control with the new ball.

As debates continue online, Gambhir’s strong defense of Rana has sparked wider discussion within the cricket community about responsible commentary and the mental well-being of emerging athletes in the age of digital scrutiny.
