Chandigarh: Senior IPS officer Om Prakash Singh has been assigned the additional charge of Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, following the state government’s decision to send DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave amid the ongoing probe into the suicide of ADGP Y. Puran Kumar.
A formal order was issued by the Haryana Home Department, placing Om Prakash Singh, a senior officer of the 1992 IPS batch, in charge of the state police force until further notice. Singh is currently serving as Director General, Law and Order, and will now hold both portfolios concurrently.
The development comes days after DGP Kapur was named in the suicide note of ADGP Y. Puran Kumar, whose suicide has triggered widespread controversy and political uproar across the state. The government’s move to temporarily relieve Kapur of his duties is seen as an attempt to ensure impartiality in the investigation and restore public confidence in the police administration.
The decision follows days of mounting pressure on the Haryana government after the deceased officer’s family accused senior police and administrative officials of harassment and caste-based discrimination. The FIR in the case mentions several senior officers, including DGP Kapur, and calls for a fair investigation into the alleged misconduct.
