Chandigarh: Panjab University has received formal approval from the Vice-President of India—who also serves as the Chancellor—to conduct elections for a newly constituted Senate for a four-year term starting in 2026. The clearance allows the university to move ahead with the long-pending process of reconstituting its apex governing body.
The Chancellor has approved the university’s proposal outlining the election of ordinary fellows from several constituencies, including registered graduates, university teaching faculty, principals and staff of technical and professional colleges, heads and teachers of affiliated arts colleges, and representatives of various faculties. Fifteen seats will be contested by registered graduates, while professors and associate/assistant professors of university teaching departments will elect two members each. Additional seats have been notified for principals, teachers in affiliated arts colleges and six faculty representatives across different academic streams.
According to the proposed timeline, polling for principals and staff of technical and professional colleges will take place on September 7, 2026. Elections for professors and associate/assistant professors of university teaching departments are scheduled for September 14, 2026. Voting for heads of affiliated arts colleges, teaching staff of affiliated arts colleges and registered graduates will be held on September 20, 2026. Faculty-wise elections on the campus are planned for October 4, 2026. Scrutiny and counting of votes will be conducted on the days immediately following each round of polling.
The Vice-President’s Secretariat informed Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig of the approval through a formal communication issued by the Under Secretary. With the Chancellor’s nod, Panjab University can now begin preparations for the detailed election process, marking a significant step toward reconstituting its top statutory body after years of administrative delay.
