Amritsar: A devastating fire broke out at a residential house located in Gali Choor Singh near Mahna Singh Chowk in Amritsar, resulting in the tragic death of two people, including an elderly man and a differently-abled young woman. The incident triggered panic in the densely populated locality.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a spark from a Lohri bonfire. The spark reportedly fell on clothes stored inside the house, igniting a blaze that spread rapidly within seconds. Locals claimed that a large quantity of inflammable material was stored inside the house, which further intensified the fire.

At the time of the incident, five people were present inside the house. With the help of neighbours and local residents, three individuals were rescued safely. However, one of the rescued victims is stated to be in critical condition and is undergoing treatment. Despite repeated attempts by residents, the elderly man was unable to move out of the house due to his frail condition and got trapped inside.

The house owner informed that the Lohri fire spark accidentally entered the house and landed on clothes kept indoors, leading to the sudden outbreak of fire. Neighbours tried their best to rescue all family members, but the elderly father could not escape in time.

Confirming the incident, SHO Balwinder Singh of Police Station B-Division said that two people, including a differently-abled young woman, lost their lives in the fire. He added that a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the incident.

Due to the narrow lanes in the area, fire brigade vehicles could not reach the spot directly and had to be stationed nearly 100 metres away. Fire personnel then rushed on foot to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses.

The incident has once again highlighted serious safety concerns regarding the use of open fire during festivals in congested residential areas.
