MOHALI — A grim atmosphere enveloped the Balongi area after a 20-year-old youth was brutally stabbed to death by a group of seven individuals following a financial dispute. Local police responded quickly by detaining several suspects for questioning and launching an intensive investigation into the fatal assault.
Initial police inquiries revealed that the victim, identified as Abhi, had been embroiled in a long-standing monetary dispute with individuals identified as Anil, Chhotu, and their brother. The conflict escalated dramatically late Sunday night during a heated argument over the phone regarding the outstanding cash. While both parties initially agreed to meet at the local vegetable market to resolve the matter, the venue was later changed. Abhi subsequently arrived at a temple in Azad Nagar, where he was confronted by the opposing group.
The confrontation turned violent as seven individuals, including three brothers, allegedly swarmed Abhi. The assailants repeatedly stabbed him in the chest with knives, causing severe injuries that left him collapsed on the road. The public nature of the attack triggered widespread panic among residents and bystanders in the vicinity.
The victim’s brother, Aman, shared that Abhi had been receiving continuous death threats over the phone for several days. Aman recounted that an unidentified caller had explicitly threatened his brother earlier, warning that he would be shot. Later in the evening, a group phone call was made to Abhi, daring him to arrive near the local Gurdwara Sahib, where the suspects claimed they had set a trap for him.
The grieving mother of the deceased also alleged the involvement of their landlord in the conspiracy. She claimed that Abhi had gone out to fetch medicine for her and was carrying 19,000 rupees when he was lured away via the phone call. She further alleged that after the stabbing, they faced hostile restrictions from entering the property, urging authorities to thoroughly investigate the landlord’s exact role in the incident.
The Balongi Police Station registered a formal murder case against seven individuals. Forensic teams gathered vital evidence from the crime scene, and investigators are scanning local closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to trace the escape routes of the attackers. Kharar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ishan Singla stated that law enforcement is examining every angle of the case, and specialized police teams are conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspects.
