Chandigarh: Punjab is expected to experience cloudy skies, rainfall and thunderstorms over the next two days due to the influence of an active western disturbance, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather system is likely to keep conditions pleasant across much of the state while providing relief from the recent spell of intense heat.
Meteorological officials said districts located in eastern and southeastern Punjab, particularly those bordering Haryana, could continue to witness active weather conditions until Monday.
The recent change in weather has already brought a significant drop in temperatures. Data released by the weather department showed that the state’s maximum temperature fell by 8.5 degrees Celsius on May 30. Temperatures remained considerably below normal levels, offering respite from the scorching summer conditions.
The Malwa region is also likely to receive rainfall, with the possibility of showers continuing through June 1. While the current weather pattern is expected to keep temperatures under control for a few more days, experts have indicated that heat levels may rise again during June.
For May 31, light rain and cloudy conditions are forecast for several districts, including Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Muktsar, Bathinda, Moga and Ludhiana. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur and Barnala.
On June 1, the western disturbance is expected to remain active, prompting the IMD to issue a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rain in districts such as Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa.
Weather conditions are likely to improve from June 2 onwards. Most districts are not expected to face any major weather warnings, although isolated areas may continue to witness light showers or overcast skies. Temperatures are likely to stay below seasonal averages.
By June 3, stable weather conditions are expected to return across Punjab, with no significant alerts issued for any district.
Weather experts believe the ongoing western disturbance will keep temperatures moderate for another two to three days, extending relief from the severe heat that had gripped the region earlier.
