New Deli: General NS Raja Subramani has officially taken charge as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), stepping into the country’s top military role with a primary mandate to implement an ambitious military theaterisation plan. A widely recognised expert on Pakistan and China, General Subramani assumes the position at a critical juncture for the nation’s defence infrastructure, aiming to significantly bolster tri-services synergy across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure as the senior-most military commander on Saturday.
Prior to this appointment, General Subramani served as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat. His extensive leadership experience includes serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff until July of last year, as well as holding the position of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command. Shortly after assuming his new role on Sunday, the General emphasized that driving organizational reforms and accelerating the integration of the armed forces would remain his foremost priorities.
A central focus of General Subramani’s tenure will be the rollout of integrated military commands, a structural shift designed to modernise India’s defence capabilities. In a brief media statement, the new Chief of Defence Staff also pledged to accelerate the development, induction, and integration of indigenous weapon systems. He assured the public that the armed forces remain resolutely committed to safeguarding national interests, protecting territorial integrity, and serving the nation with honour and professionalism.
The General’s illustrious career spans over 40 years and includes operational experience across a diverse spectrum of conflict zones and terrains. Commissioned into the eighth battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, he later commanded the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam, the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, and a premier strike corps on the Western Front. His extensive staff appointments include serving as the Defence Attaché to Kazakhstan and Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Command.
Highly educated in defence strategy, General Subramani is a graduate of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, with advanced degrees from King’s College, London, and Madras University. For his distinguished and meritorious service to the nation, he has been honoured with several of India’s top military decorations, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and Sena Medal.
