Chandigarh: Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Monday said the murder case of Aam Aadmi Party sarpanch Jermal Singh of Valtoha village in Amritsar district has been solved with the arrest of seven accused, including the two main shooters.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, the DGP said the prime shooters were arrested from Raipur in Chhattisgarh after an extensive multi-state operation. Two other accused were apprehended from Mohali, while three were arrested from Tarn Taran district.
According to police, the shooters carried out the killing in Amritsar and then went on the run, travelling through Chandigarh, Delhi, Bihar and Nanded Sahib before finally reaching Raipur. Acting on specific intelligence, police teams tracked them down and arrested them with the support of central agencies and the Chhattisgarh Police.
The arrested shooters were produced before a local court in Raipur, which granted transit remand until January 14. They are being brought to Amritsar by air for further questioning.
DGP Yadav said the case was solved through coordinated efforts of the Punjab Police, central agencies and the Chhattisgarh Police. He added that further investigation is underway to identify the motive behind the killing and to determine whether more people were involved.
