Chandigarh – In a major breakthrough, Punjab Police on Tuesday said it has busted a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM)-linked terror module with the arrest of three Jammu and Kashmir-based men involved in the abduction and murder of cab driver Anil Kumar from Mohali.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav identified the accused as Sahil Bashir (19) of Kupwara, Munish Singh alias Ansh (22) of Doda, and Aijaz Ahmed Khan alias Wasim (22) of Kalamabad. Police recovered the victim’s white Swift Dzire (PB01-D-6299) and a .32 bore country-made pistol used in the crime.
According to the FIR, Anil Kumar left home on Friday morning for a ride from Kharar to Chandigarh railway station but went missing soon after. His wife, Sudha Devi, reported that his phones were switched off, prompting a swift police response.
“Considering the grave nature of the case, multiple teams were constituted. Acting with precision, the three accused were apprehended from Batala and Gurdaspur,” said DGP Yadav. He added that accused Sahil Bashir is already wanted under UAPA and the Arms Act in J&K, while his brother had earlier been arrested with a JeM weapons cache. Both are identified as JeM Over Ground Workers (OGWs).
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ropar Range Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the accused confessed to fatally shooting the driver after an altercation, dumping his body in Mohali, and fleeing with the vehicle. SSP SAS Nagar Harmandeep Hans added that police teams later recovered Anil Kumar’s remains and three bullet shells from the crime spot.
An FIR (No. 87, dated 31-08-2025) was initially filed under Section 127(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Naya Gaon. Later, Sections 140(3), 103, 304 of the BNS, and Section 25 of the Arms Act were also added.
The case remains under investigation as Punjab intensifies its crackdown on terror networks.
