Chandigarh— Farmer organisations across Punjab have announced a statewide rail blockade on April 17, intensifying pressure on authorities to immediately begin wheat procurement and ease existing norms.
The decision was taken jointly by groups affiliated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (Punjab chapter), with additional backing from the Azad Kisan Morcha.
According to the announcement, train services will be halted from 12 noon to 3 pm if procurement does not commence without delay.
Farmer leaders said the protest comes in the wake of heavy crop damage caused by recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms, which have impacted wheat quality and left large quantities of produce unsold in mandis. They alleged that procurement delays are forcing farmers to sell their crops at lower prices.
The organisations also highlighted logistical shortcomings, including a shortage of gunny bags and lack of essential facilities such as shade and washrooms at procurement centres.
Warning of further escalation, farm leaders said stronger protest actions would follow if their demands remain unaddressed. They also appealed to the public for support, stating that the agitation is aimed at protecting farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring fair procurement practices.
