Chandigarh: Punjab is expected to witness a renewed spell of showers from tomorrow, i.e., August 22, according to the Meteorological Department. While the weather remained stable on Wednesday, officials say the incoming rains could pull down temperatures across the state. So far, seasonal rainfall has been below average, but authorities are hopeful of improvement in the coming days.
Rising Dam Levels Spark Concern
Continuous downpours in Himachal Pradesh have led to a surge in water storage across major dams. The Pong Dam on the Beas River is now running above the danger level, forcing the release of excess water to maintain a balance between inflow and discharge.
On Tuesday, water at Pong was recorded at 1383.3 feet, with inflow and outflow both measured at 59,835 cusecs. In light of this situation, the Hoshiarpur district administration has sounded an alert.
Hoshiarpur Under Close Watch
Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain confirmed that an hourly monitoring system has been activated for Pong Dam. Special officers have been stationed in sensitive villages to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies. She further appealed to residents not to rely on rumors and to contact the District Control Room (01882-220412) for verified updates.
“All safety, relief, and communication measures have been put in place. Citizens should remain calm and trust official information,” the DC said.
Status of Major Dams
As of 6 am on August 21, all three major reservoirs in the region are holding water levels above 85 percent of their total capacity:

Bhakra Dam (Sutlej River): 1666.00 feet (87.35% full); inflow – 58,671 cusecs; release – 40,392 cusecs.

Pong Dam (Beas River): 1383.12 feet (83.25% full); inflow – 59,835 cusecs; outflow – 59,835 cusecs.

Thein Dam (Ravi River): 1716.19 feet (88.36% full); inflow – 18,216 cusecs; release – 8,426 cusecs.
Heavy Rain Alert in 13 Districts
The IMD has predicted intense rainfall activity in 13 districts of Punjab starting Thursday. With reservoirs already brimming, authorities have urged people in low-lying areas to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
