Chandigarh: Daily life across Punjab is expected to experience localized disruptions on Friday, August 21, following a seven-hour statewide shutdown call issued by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The strike is anticipated to impact commercial activity and public mobility in several districts, as local trade associations and transit operators respond to the bandh appeal.
Commercial markets, retail bazaars, and road transport services are expected to remain largely shut down during the morning and early afternoon hours. Train movements could also encounter potential interruptions, with demonstration organizers appealing to railway authorities to pause schedules and cautioning that rail routes may be blocked if operations continue. Additionally, all offices and educational institutions affiliated with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee will remain closed in solidarity with the demonstration.
Essential and emergency services will continue to function without interruption throughout the duration of the shutdown. Hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency medical facilities will remain fully operational. Furthermore, explicit exemptions have been provided for wedding-related travel, students appearing for scheduled examinations, and passengers travelling to and from airports. While organizers have stated that closures will be observed voluntarily without forced enforcement, the Private School Association of Punjab has affirmed that all member private schools will function normally under standard operating hours.
