Patiala: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator from Sanaur, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, has landed in legal trouble after police issued arrest warrants against 16 individuals linked to him, including his son and personal assistant. The case, filed at Patiala’s Civil Lines police station, accuses them of providing shelter to the absconding MLA, helping him evade arrest, and disturbing public order.
Among those named are the MLA’s son Harjashan Singh alias Jashn, PA Gurpreet Singh Gurri, district youth wing chief Amar Singh Sanghera, along with Amandeep Dhot, Sajan, Dharminder Bittu, and several others. Police teams have expanded their search for the legislator to neighbouring states such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. His anticipatory bail plea is scheduled to be heard in the Patiala court on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the MLA’s wife, Simranjit Kaur, has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking protection for herself and her family. The court has asked the Punjab government and other respondents to file a reply.
In her petition, she alleged that the criminal case against her husband was politically motivated. According to her, Pathanmajra had earlier raised concerns against the irrigation department, accusing officials of misleading the government over permissions to release water into rivers and remove silt. He claimed that over 11 villages in his constituency were badly hit by floods due to government inaction. His remarks, she argued, led to resentment within the administration, after which the family’s security was withdrawn and local police station chiefs were transferred.
She further alleged that the complainant in the rape FIR, Gurpreet Kaur—who she described as the MLA’s second wife—has a history of filing similar cases. The petition claimed police raids were carried out at the MLA’s in-laws’ residence, multiple supporters were booked, and 11 individuals were arrested to build pressure. Kaur also expressed fears that her husband was being portrayed as a gangster and could even be framed in a fake encounter.
The High Court has sought a detailed response from the authorities while the police continue their search for the legislator, who remains out of custody.
