Gurdaspur (Punjab): Fear spread across Dera Baba Nanak town in Gurdaspur district on Tuesday morning after unidentified attackers shot dead a medical store owner in the busy inner market area and fled the scene.
The victim was identified as Randeep Singh, owner of Bedi Medical Store. According to initial information, Singh was heading to open his shop in the morning when assailants opened fire outside the premises. He suffered multiple bullet injuries and was rushed towards Amritsar for medical treatment, but succumbed to his wounds on the way.
This was not the first attack on Singh. On October 23, 2024, masked men had opened fire at the same medical store, leaving him seriously injured before escaping. A case related to extortion had been registered following that incident.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Batala, Dr. Mehtab Singh reached the spot along with other senior officers after receiving information about the firing. Addressing the media, he said four rounds were fired, leading to the death of the medical store owner. He added that although an extortion case was registered in 2024, no recent extortion calls had been reported.
Police have sealed the area and launched an investigation from multiple angles. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined to identify the attackers. Officials said teams are working to trace the accused and assured that those responsible will be arrested soon and dealt with strictly.
