Amritsar: In a brazen late-night assault, masked individuals opened fire on the residence of a sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor in the Ratan Singh Chowk area of Amritsar around midnight on Friday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local neighbourhood as multiple rounds were discharged at the home while the entire family was present inside. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported following the targeted shooting.
Inderjit, the councillor’s husband, spoke to the media regarding the harrowing experience and suggested a clear motive for the violence. He believes the attack is a direct act of retaliation for his recent social activism and efforts to combat the local drug trade. Inderjit had previously filed formal police complaints against several anti-social elements and alleged drug peddlers in the area, requesting that the authorities take strict action against those with existing criminal records. He maintains that this long-standing grudge is what prompted the life-threatening encounter.
The physical evidence of the attack remains visible on the walls of the residence, which are now marred by bullet marks. Immediately following the incident, the terrified family approached the local police station to file a complaint and seek justice. They have also provided investigators with CCTV footage from the premises which clearly captures the masked suspects arriving in the darkness and firing several shots before fleeing the scene.
Amritsar police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter, though an official statement from senior leadership is still pending. Officers are currently reviewing the digital evidence and recording witness statements to establish the identities of the shooters. Authorities have confirmed that efforts are underway to track down the suspects and bring them into custody as the community remains on high alert.
