Kapurthala: Normal life came to a standstill in Kapurthala on Tuesday as markets across the city remained closed following a bandh call given by the Valmiki community, supported by several local organisations. The protest was organised to press for the registration of a case against a police station in-charge, Manju Rana, over allegations of using caste-related remarks.
Shops in major commercial areas did not open for business as protesters appealed for public support to highlight what they described as administrative inaction. The bandh followed a series of representations submitted to district authorities, which, according to community leaders, failed to elicit any response.
In the days leading up to the shutdown, representatives of the Valmiki community held a meeting at the Shakundi Temple to discuss the issue and plan further steps.
Police and district officials had not issued any immediate response at the time of filing this report.
