Chandigarh: Heavy rain returned to Chandigarh on Saturday morning, raising the water level in Sukhna Lake and forcing authorities to sound the siren and reopen the floodgates. The sudden downpour ended hopes of relief for residents who had enjoyed a brief spell of sunshine yesterday.
The lake can safely hold water up to 1,163 feet, after which excess water must be released. Officials issued an alert before opening the floodgates, warning residents of Bapudham Colony and Kishangarh. Roads in these areas were already waterlogged, disrupting traffic and raising fears of worsening conditions.
This marks the latest in a series of floodgate openings this month. Earlier incidents had led to heavy waterlogging in Kishangarh, Bapudham Colony, Sector-26, and parts of Derabassi, leaving residents struggling with blocked roads and widespread inconvenience.
Authorities said they are closely monitoring the lake’s water level and have asked residents of low-lying areas to remain vigilant.
