Chandigarh: In a setback for senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, a local court on Thursday extended his judicial custody until September 6 in connection with disproportionate assets and alleged money laundering cases linked to the drug trade.
The decision prolongs Majithia’s stay in New Nabha Jail near Patiala, where he has been lodged since his arrest. The court had earlier rejected his bail plea, observing that the investigation by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau is still underway and the charges are of a serious nature.
The Vigilance Bureau continues to probe financial transactions and property records allegedly connected to Majithia. Sources said additional documents are likely to be placed before the court in the coming hearings, which could further complicate his defense.
The extension of custody underscores the growing legal pressure on the Akali leader, with the case drawing wide political attention in Punjab’s charged atmosphere.
