Jalandhar: A routine journey to visit an unwell family member turned into a frightening ordeal after a sedan caught fire while travelling on the Pathankot Bypass flyover in Jalandhar. The occupants, a husband and wife, managed to get out of the vehicle just in time, escaping without serious injuries as flames rapidly consumed the car.
The incident involved a recently purchased Swift Dzire registered in Kapurthala. According to eyewitnesses, smoke began emerging from the vehicle while it was in motion before the fire spread through the cabin within minutes. By the time help arrived, the blaze had destroyed the interior completely, reducing the seats, steering wheel and dashboard to charred remains.
People passing through the area rushed to assist the couple and attempted to control the fire using portable extinguishers and water. However, the intensity of the flames made their efforts unsuccessful, prompting an immediate call to the fire department. Firefighters reached the spot and extinguished the blaze after a sustained operation, though the vehicle could not be saved.
Police officials from Division No. 8 later visited the scene to examine the damaged car and begin an investigation. Initial findings point towards a possible electrical short circuit, although the exact cause will be determined after a detailed inspection.
The incident has also sparked criticism from local residents, who highlighted inadequate lighting on the flyover and the absence of warning signs or barricades after the vehicle came to a halt. They argued that the lack of proper safety measures could have triggered another accident, as approaching motorists had little visibility of the obstruction during the night.
The couple, who reportedly suffered shock following the incident, underwent a precautionary medical examination at a private hospital and are said to be in stable condition. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of timely vehicle maintenance and emergency preparedness while travelling.
