Chandigarh: In a move aimed at easing travel during the busy season, Northern Railway has announced the temporary addition of extra air-conditioned coaches to several popular trains operating under the Jammu and Firozpur divisions. The decision is expected to increase berth availability and improve the chances of confirmed reservations for thousands of passengers.
Each newly attached AC three-tier coach will provide around 72 additional berths, offering much-needed relief to travelers facing long waiting lists. Railway officials believe the step will particularly benefit families and groups planning long-distance journeys, while also ensuring a more comfortable travel experience.
Among the trains receiving additional coaches are the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–New Delhi Special, Jammu Rajdhani Express, Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan AC Superfast Express, Firozpur Cantt–Rameswaram Humsafar Express and the Amritsar–New Delhi Swarna Shatabdi Express. The extra coaches will be available on specified dates between June and early August, depending on the train’s schedule.
Senior railway officials stated that passenger demand traditionally rises during the summer months, especially on routes connecting Jammu and northern tourist destinations. The temporary augmentation has been introduced to reduce waiting lists and accommodate the seasonal rush without compromising passenger comfort.
Authorities have advised travelers to verify coach positions and travel dates while booking tickets and to rely only on authorised reservation channels. Passengers can also obtain updated train information through the National Train Enquiry System, the Rail Madad service and the 139 railway helpline.
The initiative reflects the Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve passenger convenience by matching coach capacity with growing travel demand, ensuring that more people can secure confirmed seats during the peak holiday period.
