CM Bhagwant Mann Cracks Down on Flood Mishandling, Suspends Three Senior Punjab Officials

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken stern disciplinary action in the wake of the recent flood crisis that devastated parts of the state. Three senior government officials were suspended for their alleged failure to respond effectively during the emergency.

The decision comes after mounting criticism of the state administration’s preparedness and response to the monsoon-related flooding, which left several districts inundated and caused significant damage to property, crops, and livelihoods.

Accountability for Negligence

The suspended officials, whose names have not yet been officially disclosed, were reportedly holding key positions in departments responsible for disaster management, irrigation, and civil administration. The suspension came over the breaking of gates of Madhopur headworks.

Chief Minister Mann said the suspension is part of a broader effort to hold those in power accountable. “This is not just about punishing a few individuals — it’s about setting a standard. No one will be allowed to put public safety at risk,” he said in a statement.

Inquiry Committee Probing Further Lapses

A high-level inquiry is underway to investigate the sequence of events leading to the crisis, and more officials may face action based on its findings. Sources suggest the state government is closely examining reports of ignored warnings, failure to reinforce embankments, and delayed evacuations in flood-prone zones.

The Chief Minister had earlier assured residents during his visits to flood-affected areas that those found guilty of negligence would not be spared.

Public and Political Pressure

The move comes amid growing pressure from opposition leaders, activists, and residents who accused the administration of ignoring early warning signs and failing to implement preventive measures in time. Demands for compensation and rehabilitation for affected families have also intensified in recent weeks.
