Chandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a formal chargesheet against four Punjab Police officers in connection with the assault on Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath, in a Mohali court on Thursday.

According to the chargesheet, inspector Ronnie Singh has been named as the main accused in the case. The prosecution has pressed charges including grievous hurt and wrongful restraint, among others. Notably, the charge of attempted murder, which had been included in the initial FIR, is absent from the CBI’s filing.

Earlier, the Patiala Police had registered an FIR against four inspectors, including Harry Boparai, Ronnie Singh, and Harjinder Dhillon, under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), covering offences such as voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Another inspector was subsequently added under sections relating to causing hurt and negligence.

The incident allegedly took place on the night of March 13–14 near a roadside eatery adjacent to Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. Colonel Bath and his son had reportedly been standing next to their car while having a meal when several police officers in civilian attire approached them, asking the Colonel to move his vehicle to make way for theirs. The situation allegedly escalated, and over a dozen police personnel are said to have attacked Colonel Bath and his son with rods and sticks, resulting in injuries.

The CBI’s chargesheet marks a key development in the high-profile case, as proceedings move forward in the Mohali court.
