Kurukshetra: A fast-track court has delivered its verdict in the high-profile robbery and murder case at the well-known Atul Clinic in Sector 13, sentencing five accused to death for plotting and executing the crime that led to the killing of gynaecologist Dr Vinita Arora.

The judgment was pronounced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Hemram after the court found the accused guilty under charges related to murder, criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and violations of the Arms Act. The convicts include the doctor’s former domestic help and her associates, who were held responsible for planning the crime using insider information.

According to Deputy District Attorney Rajkumar, the court convicted Poonam, a former domestic worker who had been employed at the doctor’s residence, along with her partner Vikram alias Vicky, Vikramjit alias Bittu, Sunil Kumar and Manish Kumar. Two other accused, including a household worker and an alleged arms supplier, were acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.

The incident took place on the night of January 9, 2023, when the accused entered the residence located above Atul Clinic on the pretext of buying a cake. Once inside, they held Dr Atul Arora and his elderly parents hostage at gunpoint. During the robbery, Dr Vinita Arora was assaulted with a heavy object, resulting in her death.

After committing the crime, the accused fled with cash and jewellery kept in the household temple. Dr Atul Arora managed to escape by jumping onto a neighbouring rooftop and raising an alarm, but the assailants had already escaped by the time help arrived.

Police investigations later revealed that the crime was carefully planned with the help of the former domestic worker, who was aware of the layout of the house and the location of valuables. The police arrested seven people during the investigation, and the case was tried in a fast-track court considering its gravity.

The verdict brings closure to a case that had sent shockwaves across the city and raised serious concerns over organised crime and misuse of insider access.
