Amritsar: A police constable assigned to the security detail of a Gurdaspur Deputy Superintendent of Police was brutally murdered in Jagdev Kalan village on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Jagjit Singh, was returning home from his tour of duty when he was intercepted and assaulted by a group of eight to ten individuals armed with iron rods and wooden sticks. According to local authorities, the fatal encounter appears to have been the culmination of a minor domestic disagreement.
Upon his arrival in the village, the assailants, allegedly led by a man named Balraj, launched a sudden and violent offensive. Singh sustained severe head injuries from the iron rods and collapsed unconscious at the scene. His family members, who were also reportedly assaulted during the confrontation, attempted to rush him to a hospital in Amritsar for emergency treatment. Tragically, Singh succumbed to his injuries while in transit, leaving his family and the local community in a state of shock.
The victim’s wife, Harjeet Kaur, expressed profound grief, stating that the attackers struck without any prior dialogue or warning. She emphasized that the dispute was trivial and did not justify such a lethal and coordinated response. The grieving family has formally petitioned the authorities for the highest level of legal action against all those involved in the killing of the off-duty officer.
Station House Officer Harsimrat Kaur of the Rajasansi police station confirmed that a formal murder case has been registered based on the testimony provided by the victim’s family. She reported that five suspects have already been taken into custody, while coordinated raids are currently being conducted across the region to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the mob attack. The police department is working to establish the exact sequence of events to ensure that every perpetrator is brought to justice for this brazen act of violence.
